The 68th running of the celebrated Virginia Gold Cup timber stakes has drawn the cream off the top of the nation’s crop of timber specialists nominated to race for the tantalizing $40,000 purse.
As the cornerstone event on a race card rarely imagined outside of the multi-million dollar Breeder’s Cup program, the Gold Cup itself drew a total of 11 timber specialists nominated to the rich event.
The entire race card crackles with excitement as hurdlers have their own stakes race to contest — the $25,000 Swan Lake Stakes. Thirteen are nominated to the three-mile hurdle handicap.
The wildly successful Sport of Kings novice hurdle series also makes a whistle-stop at Great Meadow, offering to horsemen a qualifying maiden race.
The Sport of Kings series, for which a horse must be fully nominated for before racing in any of the hurdle events, now features both spring and fall races.
Combined with the novice races — this year for horses who did not win over hurdles prior to June 1, 1992 — is a group-of maiden qualifiers. The qualifying races guarantee the winner fully paid nomination to the year’s Sport of Kings series. Maidens are entered for Great Meadow’s race with National Steeplechase on April 26.
