Ninth on the all-time NSA money-winning ’chasers list, Yaw, owned by New York’s Timber Bay Farm, has earned $314,000 in his successful lifetime over hurdles. The 10-year-old has raced for six years and won 10 times, including the New York Turf Writers Cup twice.
French-bred Runaway Romance won his first start off the boat from Europe last spring, taking the $25,000 Frost stakes at Nashville, Term, in May. He followed that score with a front-running triumph at Dueling Grounds in Kentucky.
Bruce Haynes’ Key To A Miracle has tallied up two wins quickly over the past six months, breaking his maiden late last fall and taking a conditioned contest this spring. The Bristol, Tenn., horseman knows how to pick ’em and may have an ace up his sleeve with this youngster.
The list of nominations is rounded out by Can Cut, a winner last June over the Great Meadow timber course who has reverted to race over brush once again and maiden hurdler Karetto.
The list of nominations for both races will be studied and pored over by horsemen this week, with some owners deciding to enter after the fact and some nominees deciding to take their horses out of the running even before the flag goes up.
Second guessing how a horse will run on any given Saturday has been raised to an art form by many, and this nomination process is an interesting gauge of the success rate of professional thoroughbred horsemen.
