(EDITOR’S NOTE: The above verse is a light-hearted look at the annual March Cheltenham Festival held at the Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloscestershire, England. Three days of championship ’chasing each year determines worldwide jumping leaders.

American runners have fared well at the famed course. Lonesome Glory gave trainer Bruce Miller and daughter-rider Blythe the first-ever American trainee winners’ laurels trimphing there on Dec. 12,1992.

Cheltenham's long, uphill run-in proved the undoing of pre-race favorite Al Muthm, giving Lonesome Glory a hard-fought, headlong victory at the wire. The tactical course in 1987 outdid four-time American champion Flatterer, who succumbed by a half-length to English champ See You Then in the Festival's Champion Hurdle: he was also second in the '86 French Champion Hurdle.
