Seven races made up the card at the Virginia Gold Cup races at Great Meadow in The Plains. Though the feature race, The Gold Cup drew most of the attention, all races boasted top fields and handsome purses for the winners.
Virginia horses, owners, trainers and jockeys made a strong showing at the meeting, especially Middleburg rider and trainer Gerry Newman who enjoyed two wins and a second.
Newman piloted Margaret White’s Comchen to win the $25,000 First American Bank Cup, passing Marlboro Prince who, with jockey Michael Barry, led throughout most of the race until hobbling at the final fence. Comchen took advantage of Marlboro Prince’s bad jump to take the lead and held off McBurney and Gateshead to win by a length.
Comchen, trained by Doug Fout of The Plains, is owned and bred by Margaret White of Halfway Farm in Middleburg.
The $25,000 victory didn’t end Newman’s roll. After the trophies were awarded, he hurried back to the paddock to pick up another ride on Albert C. Van Metre’s Lucky Consort in the $12,500 USTA Cup.
Going to the lead in this race on the final turn, Newman urged his horse, trained by Tom Pratt of Middleburg, distancing Bettina Belmont Ward’s Chilean-bred Dragonetti, Jeff Teter in the irons, by 10-lengths at the finish.
