Once he is nominated, Farris says, the foundation of his campaign against Democrat Don Beyer, the incumbent, will be based on his own commitment to principle of limited government and lower . taxes and Beyer’s allegiance to big government spending and support of higher taxes at the state and federal levels.
In Virginia, a state carried handily by the Republican national ticket last fall, Farris believes the GOP’s best hope for success this fall is a broad appeal to the majority of Virginians who don’t like the trend toward expanded government in the state and in Washington.
He compares the Republican opportunity in 1993 to the situation that faced the party in 1980 when Ronald Reagan called for a return to smaller government and traditional values. “If we don’t make a case that we want to change the nature of the government we’ve been given by Democrats in Virginia for a dozen years, then we won’t be successful,” Farris remarked.
