The Bruce Miller trainee propped for his ’93 season by cantering to victory at Warrenton’s point-to-point on the flat. He opted out of the muddy Middleburg races, preferring the top of the ground and a long distance for his jumps debut this season.
Winner of the $20,000 Strawberry Hill Classic, good-looking Hurler also won a stakes race over hurdles in New York last term. The gray gelding came from claiming roots, but he has matured into a useful runner for owner Mrs. John Frazier II.
Another recent winner in the Commonwealth, Happy Friar is a hard-knocking claimer with some speed. The Chesterbrook nominee won three of four in ’92, and took his initial ’93 start, the optional claimer at Middleburg April 18. The bay gelding is strong and tough and seems to go the distance.
Carrington Racing Stables’ Break Clean, another Kentuckybred gelding, took three ’chases in ’92, including a rich claimer at the Spa in New York. Any horse with the class to win over Saratoga’s speed-favoring strip is one to watch on the flat Meadow oval.
Noel Laing victor Delessio also scored thrice last term. The gelding broke his maiden at Fairfax and didn’t look back — earning over $35,000 in the autumn season.
