shelters across the U.S. We do not want to participate in mass euthanization as a solution to to the problem.
In order to do this, we need community support, action, and as always, funding. RAWL is trying to bring the message of spaying and neutering to our community as the first step in the solution. We are in the process of setting up a spay/neuter fund to assist those individuals who can not afford the entire cost of the operation. We hope to have this program in full swing in a few months.
RAWL would like everyone in our community to visit us at the shelter. Often we hear that many people do not come to the shelter, because it is too depressing. Although it is depressing when any healthy adoptable animal does not have a permanent home, you can rest assured that at our shelter, we do all we can to find homes for each of our animals. We want the community to overcome their anxieties and predetermined notions of animal shelters, and come and see what The Rappahannock Animal Shelter is really all about.
With RAWL and our shelter manager, Mary Lou, in charge, you need not be haunted by the faces of animals doomed to die. Instead, you will see animals that are awaiting loving homes, and people doing everything in their power to get them there. Although the shelter has been full to capacity each day of this new year, not one animal has been put to death simply because we could not immediately find it a home.
Come and visit us. Ask questions, and if you have some extra time, volunteer to help. In the process, you, like RAWL, will become informed, and perhaps together we can work towards a solution to the pet overpopulation crisis in our community.
