This past week in high school sports brought elusive first wins for the soccer team and for the boys’ track team.

The soccer team defeated the Central Falcons 3 to 2 in a home game last Tuesday. Rappahannock got out to an early lead on a goal scored by Eddie Sause. By the end of the first half, however, Central had tied the score with a goal of its own.

Rappahannock had two goals fairly early in the second half, the first by Jonathan Maeyer in a pre-arranged play on a penalty kick. Jim Clarke scored Rappahannock’s third and decisive goal.

Then the players had to hang on and prevent Central from taking their victory away. Central got one more goal, but that ended the scoring.

Following the victory Coach Uli Maeyer said, “They played to what they can do today. They were just a little better than the other team. ”

He was concerned about his players lack of physical conditioning, however. “They’re not in shape. They nearly collapsed in the second half,” he said. “Central has a good, disciplined team.”

On Wednesday the track team participated in a three-way track meet at Manassas Park against Manassas Park and Page County. The boys squad came away with a victory over the other schools with 69 points to 49 for Manassas Park and 41 for Page. The girls came in third in the three-way meet.

The Rappahannock squads had seven first place wins, eight seconds and seven thirds. Jason Waters won the high jump and 3,200 meter run and started for the victorious 4x400 meter relay team that also included Mike Grimsley, Chris Payne and Randy Early.

Willie Shanks won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and started for the 4x100 meter relay team that won the event with Mike Gilkey, Jason Settle and John Mallory. He was also third in the triple jump.

Alice Reeve won first in the shot put and second in the discus. Sherry Jo Shaw won the girls’ 3,200-meter run and came in third in the 800-meter run. Jessica Arnold won first in the 1,600-meter run and second in the 800-meter run. Mark Jenkins won the 1,600-meter run and tied Mike Grimsley for second in the 1,200-meter run.
