Waco assault
an outrage
To the Editor: •
The tragic events near Waco, Texas, should give us pause. Why did over 80 people die? Whom had the Branch Davidians threatened, endangered, attacked, that our government found it necessary to make a major assault?
Bradley Fighting Vehicles, which would indeed have found proper use in the Los Angeles riots or the Southern Ohio prison uprising where criminals attacked society, killed citizens, destroyed property without justification, were used in Texas against men, women and children who had attacked no one, nor destroyed others’ property. No criminal gangs there, merely people who search for meaning and truth strikes most of us as misguided — but, that’s their right, isn’t jt?
Our is, or was, a free country. Those who founded it, whose ideas we honor, revere and follow — at least in a bus — believed in limited, very limited, government. They would not have accepted what has just occurred in Texas. Published stories show everyone had willingly joined the Waco compound; no neighbors had complained; early in the seige a local policeman was quoted- as saying that there had never been problems there, that once a summons had been served on Koresh and the matter settled easily. Couldn’t ATF have done the same?
