Cancer drive

Dorothy Butler of Sperryville is this year’s coordinator for the American Cancer Society fund raising drive. Those volunteers working with her represent the other magisterial districts. Most of the funds the Society raises in Virginia are used to support American Cancer Society research, rehabilitation programs, and services for cancer patients. About 60 percent of the money raised by the Rappahannock Unit will go toward programs and services in Rappahannock County. The remainder supports national research and programs.
The Rappahannock Unit has sponsored several informative programs on early detection of breast cancer, talks to local orchardists regarding skin cancer prevention and made available free bottles of sunblock. Additionally the Unit has worked with school dieticians to ensure that students are getting healthy choices for school lunches. Marion Sharp, R.N., a member of the Board has conducted public education through programs at school about the dangers of tobacco use.
