day mixed with several brief showers, Were treated to a long afternoon of eight races filled with spills and thrills. The Gold Cup race dominated the day with only two of the original starters surviving the trying four-mile course, in the only race still run purely for sport without benefit of any monetary reward.
It was also the second trip Mrs. Randolph and Mike Smithwick made to the winner’s circle having taken the honors in the Broadview race immediately preceding the Gold Cup with Mrs. Randolph’s steeplechase champion of 1965 Bon Nouvel.
Bon Nouvel scored a 20length victory over the nine-horse field decimated by Milton Ritzenberg’s Mieldor who put in an extremely bad seventh fence, losing his rider Doug Small Jr., while setting the sizzling early pace.
From here to the finish, it was a question of Aitcheson keeping the big horse on top despite several rough fences in the tw'o-mile 15-jump course, to give Mrs. Randolph her third Broadview victory. She previously won in 1961 with Real Fancy and in 1962 with Gem Ruby.
