Virginia State Police Sgt. Gregory A. Morris is in serious condition in the intensive care unit of Fairfax Hospital, two days after he was accidentally shot during a training exercise in Rappahannock County.
State Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said Morris, 40, the leader of the Second Division tactical team, was struck by a bullet about 3:40 p.m. Monday as the team practiced room entries at an abandoned twostory house on a 300-acre farm outside Chester Gap.
Morris is one of two State Police supervisors assigned to the Warrenton area office, which covers Fauquier and Rappahannock counties. A 19-year veteran of the State Police, Morris has been a member of the tactical team for 15 years and its supervisor for six years.
The tactical team is the State Police version of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. Each of the VSP’s seven divisions has a similar team, which includes sharpshooters, explosive experts and entry specialists. They train several times each month on a variety of skills, including rappelling, search and rescue and combined training with K-9 and SCUBA units.
Ms. Caldwell said the bullet entered Morris’s left side above the hip and travelled upward, lodging in his spinal channel betw een a pair of vertebrae. He was flown by a Fairfax County police helicopter to Fairfax Hospital, where he entered surgery at 5:30 p.m.
