Mrs. Massie agreed to i the issue “to the back burner.”

The board agreed to allow guidance counsellors to act as student “advocates” in discipline cases if the student or his parent wants the advocate.

Dr. Tole suggested that in some cases someone other than guidance counsellors might be preferred by the students.

Mrs. Massie suggested the school system develop a list of people willing to act as student advocates in disciplinary cases.

Dr. Gangel made it clear he wanted to try to work only with guidance counsellors as student advocates, and the board agreed to try that.

The board agreed to form a nonprofit organization to market computerized lessons developed as a result of the RJR/Nabisco project if any are commercially marketable. Dr. Gangel said representatives from RJR/Nabisco have said they are not interested in the software being developed. Incorporating a non-profit organization will cost between $100 and $200, he said. “It’s a relatively inexpensive gamble,” he said. He added if software is marketable, sales may help pay to expand the computerized program once the RJR/Nabisco project ends.

The board also agreed to explore having office space for the assistant principal and guidance counsellor included in the elementary school addition if it can be handled within the overall cost of the project. Dr. Gangel said that the elementary assistant principal already has overall responsibility for the lower grades and the principal for the upper grades. He said having office space in the addition would free up space in the existing office and library.
