He finished up the first leg of an extensive statewide tour in time to meet Ms. Terry in debate and then took off again for a week that w ould include the daily grind of person-toperson campaigning on the Eastern Shore, Tidewater, and the Mid-Peninsula.
Wherever he goes, Allen tries to score points by telling people he has come to hear their concerns, while his opponent prefers consuming wine and cheese at the home of Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., while in the company of Hillary Clinton.
The aggressive strategy is a high risk one for Allen, but also one that gives him the best opportunity to cut into Ms. Terry’s lead.
Indeed, after Allen showed a video of striking coal miners in Southwest Virginia hurling rocks at strike breakers and criticized Ms. Terry for not forcefully intervening w hile she served as attorney general, the Democratic nominee replied, “now we can declare chivalry dead in the Commonwelath of Virginia.”
Though Ms. Terry claimed the remark was made in jest, it could certainly be interpreted as a subtle warning to the Republicans that a substantial number of women may be offended if they think Allen is roughing up one of their sex. Allen said he felt Ms. Terry’s remark was an effort to hide behind her gender.
