About 9:30 p.m., she said, the surgeons reported that they had been unable to save Morris’ left kidney, and that more surgery was necessary to remove the bullet. The surgery was completed about 1a.m. Tuesday, she said, after the bullet ■was successfully removed.
Tuesday afternoon, Ms. Caldwell added, the doctors were “cautiously optimistic” about Morris’ condition and prospects for a complete recovery. She said Morris had spoken with his wife Mary Tuesday afternoon, and the doctors reported he had regained movement and sensation in his legs and feet.
Fairfax Hospital reported that Morris’ condition was upgraded from critical to serious Tuesday afternoon.
First reports about the accident speculated that Morris was struck by a round that ricocheted from a target, Ms. Caldwell said.
On Tuesday afternoon however, she said, “at this point we are unsure what happened.” The incident will be investigated by the State Police Bureau of Professional Standards and its Department of Training, a routine procedure in all such cases.
She confirmed that the bullet that struck Morris was apparently fired from a 10mm Smith & Wesson automatic pistol, the standard sidearm carried by troopers.
