This Year

Virginia producers expect to harvest 380 million pounds of apples in 1993 based on a July 1 survey by the' Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service. This would be three percent' above last year’s 370 million pounds but nearly 10 percent below thei apple production of 1991. Growers experienced a normal winter and;

spring with no late frost or freeze. Pollination was excellent and fruit set was good. Excellent topsoil moisture and sufficient rains throughout the growing season have created ideal growing conditions and producers feel optimistic for a good crop.

Virginia’s peach crop is forecast at 27 million pounds, eight percent above the previous year’s 25 million » pounds. ]«
