School Board members got an opportunity to see results from this year’s Literacy Passport Tests and other standardized tests at last week’s meeting.
This year’s sixth graders showed a tremendous gain in the Literacy Passport tests. The results from the standardized tests were mixed.
This year 82.6 percent of Rappahannock’s sixth graders passed all three sections of the Literacy Passport test. That compares to 72.3 percent who passed all three tests in sixth grade last year.
The gains in the reading and writing portions of the test were the most striking. This year 94.3 percent of the sixth graders passed the reading portion of the test compared to 81.5 percent last year, and 94.2 percent passed the writing portion compared to 86.6 percent last year. In mathematics 88.6 percent passed compared to 83.1 percent last year.
These were the highest percentages in reading and writing for the four years the tests have been given and in mathematics second only to 1991 when 91.3 percent passed.
It is difficult to evaluate the significance of these local test results because results for the state have not been released yet. Last year 64 percent of the state’s 6th graders passed all three tests.
