Government is empowered to replace old name with new ones. An earlier board changed Sandy Hook to Huntly; a new one could rename our county seat “Little W” or Sperry ville “Little Apple.”
As for Poe’s Road, I’ll hold with the name known regionally and locally for more than a century by such as Stonewall Jackson and Bob Ridley Eastham. After all, changing a name doesn’t change county history; name change simply renders more people oblivious to county history. And I think that’s a mistake.

Asks For Help
To the Editor:
The Rappahannock Historical Society urges the Board of Supervisors to reconsider its action naming Route 637 between Route 647 and U.S. 522 “Jericho” Road (as stated in the newspaper) or “Jerico” (as apparently advertised), unless historic use of that name can be documented. Volunteer researchers into County history are unaware of such documentation, but we are taking a special look. We are also requesting help from the citizenry, via the Rappahannock News.
I regret that the Hiatorial Society was not present at the July 8 hearing. At the time, we saw no reason to be there since the 911 planners had been communicating with us, and since we thought it had been agreed to use “North Poe’s Road” and “South Poe’s Road” as listed in
