Mr. Dennis said that he and his wife own river frontage and do not farm. The land is wooded, and “I do not know how to keep trees from shedding leaves,” he added.
“Tier III is one tool to help bring about better water quality,” he continued. “I used to love to eat Chesapeake Bay oysters. I hope some day we can do that again.”
Members of the audience asked several questions about “non point source” polution from farm runoff and erosion. Non point source pollution accounts for 90 percent of the pollution in the Rappahannock they said. Ms. Gregory said that she did not know about regulations for non point source polution but she would find out before the meetings later this summer.
The program ended with Ms. Halgren reading from Maya Angelou’s poem written for the presidential inauguration and Lalah Gandharvi from Charlottesville singing a song she had written ending “We sang in Rappahannock for the earth.”
