Herrengasse is a street lined with peaked Renaissance house of the towns former socially elite. St. Jacob’s Church, with its 500 year old stained glass windows, houses one of Riemenschneider’s most beautiful works, the Altar of the Holy Blood. Jutting out from the main part of town on a promontory that forces a Ushaped bend in the River Tauber, is the Rurggarten. This public garden was the site of two castles belonging to a count and an emperor in the 12th Century. Only St. Rlasius Chapel remains. Beyond the wall and across the Tauber rest the Topplerschlosschen, a doll like tower that was the home of a 14th Century Bergermeister who was probably one of the first suburbanites. Down below and to the left, a remarkable fortified medieval bridge spans the river just as it has for hundreds of years.
