By his own estimate, Katzen has visited and spoken with 6,350 people since his campaign began.
“That show’s that obviously I’ve got a lot more to go to. We have a registered voter count of about 32,000. The actual voter turnout is probably closer to 21,000,” he said.
But Katzen may have been in contact with many more of these voters than his door-to-door count includes. In addition to the neighborhood visits, he tries to get to four or five events each weekend — carnivals, livestock auctions, drag races, or whatever else might be going on in the three-county district. Additionally, he mails out about 15 letters on a daily basis.
“Every area except fundraising is generally where I wanted to be,” he said, “but we now have events scheduled literally at least one a week between the crab feast (last Sunday) and the end of August. We have, I guess, seven fundraisers that already have been scheduled and we have about seven more that will be scheduled.
“I’m confident that the fundraising side will be attended to,” he said. "What I’ve been doing is ... asking people for five-five-five: five dollars, five hours of volunteer work, or five names of prospective voters.”
In addition to the grassroots quality of his campaign, Katzen promised to raise the stakes as the season progresses. Gubernatorial candidate George Allen has promised several joint appearan’ces, he said, and Congressman Frank Wolf, R-lOth, has committed his help, Katzen said.
