Beverly Leathers, director of the Department of Social Services in the county, said when most people "think of welfare they think of money," but the money programs such as AFDC, Food Stamps and Medicaid are only part of what social services does.
The department also administers a lot of service programs, she said at a program in the Rappahannock Library Friday.
The Medicaid program is by far the largest, in the county with 411 people eligible for services in "a zillion categories" and over $1.5 million spent, she said.
The Food Stamp program has about 138 families eligible receiving stamps forth $215,000. The smallest ^jWBaram. WiiA&.iP. FamUigs tyjOt - Dependent- Children (AFDC). It currently serves about 18 families and gave out about $31,000 last year.
