"A 3,000-pound car against a chainlink fence? That car's going to go through it,” she said.
Sunday's racing event was the Super Street Shoot Out, which accepted cars that run on the street as well as other racier models.
For $10 fans received admission for the day's events and access to the pit areas.
The Windinglands stressed that the track operators had no control over the spectators, who they feel should not be wandering into the pit areas or close to the chain-link fence. They also said there was no way to identify the track’s employees.
"There was no control of the spectators and employees," Lynn Windingland said.
"Spectator stands are just within feet of the track, and there seems to be no restriction," he said.
People stand right along the fence, which aligns with the race track, according to the Windinglands. The only protection between these spectators and the cars is the short guard rail around the track.
"You can stand right at the fence. There are no signs, no restrictions, no control over where you go," Windingland said. "People should not be standing along the fence line."
Also, they said the spectator stands are located too close to the race track. "The stands are only maybe two or three steps away from the fence," he said.
She added that this accident will wreak havoc dn the minds of all of the witnesses, and particularly the drag race driver involved. "The young man that had this accident has a lifetime of grief," she said.
Another race car enthusiast was disturbed by some of the features at Sumerduck Dragway. "I would say the guard rail is too low," said Spencer Dean, 54, of Calverton, who has been coming to the track off and on since he was 18.
"The guard rail is not a deterrent; it should be able to take a big whack," Dean said. "And that chain-link fence, a chihuahua could knock that down."
Another concern was the track's surface, which he said may have been slick after freezing over the night before.
"The track was too cold from last night, when it froze over," Dean said. "We’ve had a whole lot of rain lately and the track hadn’t had enough time to
