to teaching adult education. After contributing a daughter to the system, she finished her teaching career in Warren County where she taught at both the high school and the middle school.
She said, "I understand it is necessary to be fiscally responsible and make the best possible use of our resources."
Pete Jenkins supported Mrs. Nichols saying she taught him music when she first came. "I would like to see her on the board if it is in any way possible," he said.
Phil Lamma also supported Mrs. Nichols saying she was the best qualified with her background in education.
Nelson Atkins said, "I was here when Mrs. Nichols came. I would like to see her continue Paul's term."
Roger Welch said he greatly regretted Mr. Nichols's death. He noted that he had been involved in founding the Athletic Boosters Club which had raised about $30,000 for the school sports program. "I would like to be considered, but Mrs. Nichols also has my full support," he said.
Board Chairman John Tole noted, "This is an awkward situation for everyone. It is an unusual situation, and I appreciate you all for your interest."
Hampton District representative Bryant Lee noted that they had to choose between "four good people. It will be difficult to make a decision."
Following the executive session Mr. Tole said the board members had considered sneaking out a back door, and Mr. Lee said he had wanted to be the first one out. "Consider our situation in trying to make a decision that by necessity cannot please everyone," Mr. Tole said. "We are fortunate to have a board so balanced in its viewpoint." .
Although the vote was unanimous in open session, it was obvious that the board had started out split and it took time to agree on a candidate.
