Water Studies
Slated in Town
After months spent preparing a request for proposals and going over the proposals from those firms that responded, the Town of Washington had contracted for some preliminary studies on the need for a sewer system.
Charlie Tompkins, chairman of the Town Council committee studying the need for a sewer system, announced that the council has contracted with Resource International, Ltd., headquartered in Ashland, to assist the town with engineering/planning studies.
The purpose of the study, according to Mr. Tompkins, is "to evaluate and help determine the need,(if any) for storm water and sewer improvements."
Among the data to be collected is information on storm water runoff characteristics. To accomplish this, water samples will be gathered from certain stream and pond sites in town and in the county near the town limits. Background samples as well as storm water runoff samples associated with "rainfall events" will be analyzed to "assist in identifying potential points of environmental concern," according to Mr. Tompkins.
Town citizens who are members of the committee will be performing the sampling following training by the engineering firm. Mr. Tompkins wants town citizens to be aware that people on die committee and employees of Resource International may be moving around in town, even in their back yards, collecting samples.
Residents and businesses may also be surveyed on their opinions on the town’s needs "related to storm water ahd sewer problems (if any),” Mr. Tompkins said.
