From the earliest memories of a person, no doubt will come to mind, ,things done or seen that were out of ,the ordinary or otherwise impressed (the young mind so that it remains many years after the event occurred. The recalling of the event may take on high or missed elements in retelling it but the fact the memory is there is worthy in itself that it made that much of an impression. i. Does it have to be a good memory to remain in the mind so long? One answers no. Neither does it have to be .something done or out of the ordinary that will linger with the person so involved. It could be the character, or .worse the words of the character that will impact young minds in one way or another.
What I'm getting at is plain and simple, and an often over looked fact. The fact is that most adults don’t keep their word of promise to very young .people, let alone taking time to realize that out very actions, deeds, words, -etc. are being witnessed by these little ipeople all the time. Perhaps if we , ignore them long enough, keep putting 'off doing whatever it is, long enough, •-they’ll forget about it, or worse learn .that we are liars. Aware of being left out on lots of things in my own life, I vowed that I'd never, knowingly, not keep my word to a child. Nor, would I /lot try to show as much attention, affection and understanding as possible. Which brings me to the reason for -this story.
Back in mid summer, several of my nephews and niee'es were begging me to go hiking. During this time of year the danger of snake bite is too real, but I promised that as soon as it turned cooler and the leaves were off the trees I'd take them. This is typical S)f my nephews and nieces to want their uncle to do things with them. Whether we're at grandma’s throwing frisbee, or just walking down to the .creek and back, these are things they want to include me in. I ask myself, "why me?" My answer is that because I take the time to do them. Perhaps I tend to override their parents' rules a little too, still the accompanying adult is necessary these days and besides I love doing things with them, i. Fall finally arrived and upon every .■visit I heard the resounding question, "when are we going hiking?" I gave in.
