I'd like to welcome Page Johanson as the school system publicity coordinator. She will help publicize the special activities at both RCES and RCHS.
Lots of exciting learning has been taking place at school. Here are some experiences shared by various teachers.
Mrs. Bailey's fifth grade English classes have been learning about Puerto Rico. They have really enjoyed participating in storytelling activities. This was done with musical instruments and great imagination.
Mrs. Flinchum's first grade science class has been studying a unit on forces. The students made yachts and had a yacht race. They discovered that moving air is a pushing force and the stronger the moving air, the faster their boats sailed across the water. All went home with blue ribbon certificates, wet shirt sleeves and smiles on their faces.
The kindergarten classes have enjoyed two field trips so far this year. On Oct. 11 they visited the Sperryville Fire Department and enjoyed talk on fire safety and a tour of the fire truck. The also visited the Rescue Squad, for a nice snack and a presentation on the Rescue Squad and rescue equipment. The second trip on Oct. 25 was to the Williams Apple Orchard. The nice hosts were Eddie Williams and John Cloud and John’s special friend, "Walt." The children were shown how cider is made and how apples are sorted. Everybody got to take home a bag of apples.
Ms. DeLobe's second grade class has enjoyed learning about and reading tall tales. They are also working on comprehension and new vocabulary to prepare them for writing their own stories. In social studies they have enjoyed creating their own pirate maps with landmarks, labeling them and making their own key and having a buried treasure. They use landmarks and a compass to write sequential directions to uncover their hidden treasures.
