About 25 RCHS students came out for wrestling last week including ^one girl, Sarah Thomas.

Coaches Paul Paratore and Jon Heddleston said they have been working the kids really hard, and they are pleased that they are not quitting. "I'm working them harder than they have ever worked before, and they keep coming back," Coach Paratore said.

This,is the first year for wrestling , at the high school, and the team will ‘"compete as a junior varsity. More than ^’half those who came out for the team '■this year had never wrestled before. The others, including their own sons, *-‘were involved in a quite successful '-’'youth wrestling program with these f ‘two coaches last year.

They have practiced in the elementary school gym from 3:30 to 6 p.m. -“Monday through Friday, but a half hour of that time is involved in setting 3«out the mat in the beginning and putting it away in the end. Coach. Paratore said.

Most of the rest has been involved in conditioning exercises and learning „ jnoves.

"Wrestling is a very technical • sport. You have to have a base of ‘knowledge,” Coach Paratore said. He " has been trying to cram in that knowledge as quickly as possible, especially "for those new to wrestling. ' Because the emphasis has been on building from a junior varsity, the ' team is loaded with younger students "’wrestling in the lighter weight cate‘’"gories "We don’t have enough of the ’-bigger kids," he said. (l There are 13 weight categories: ■'under 103 pounds, under 112, under '“119, under 125, under 130, under 135, under 140, under 145, under 152, ’“under 160, under 171, under 189, "under 275. “ "We’re loaded in the 103 to 135 weights," Coach Paratore said. (■' The way matches are scored the ’ ’team will have to forfeit any category ■ it cannot enter a wrestler, and a ’wrestler can move up only one weight - category. The other team automatical■’ ly gets six points for a forfeit. - If a wrestler wins a match by under eight points, the team gets three ‘ points. If the win is by eight to 14 ^points the team gets four points, and if <> the win is by 15 points or is the result of a pin, the team gets six points.
