The way to monitor water quality in your own stream is to do a collection of macro invertebrates (aquatic animals that can be seen without a microscope), he said. Monitor those commonly found, which are very tolerant of pollution, others which are intolerant, and a variety in between.

The results are recorded on a data sheet and the continuity of the collection over time will provide a valuable record. When the accuracy of the critter identification is checked it assures that the data will be accepted by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
