“The Water Show”, July 4Aug. 27, at the Middle Street Gallery, assembles the work of more than two dozen artists. There are oil and acrylic paintings, hand-made paper and glass displays, photographs and wood carvings — a particularly varied group, showing or suggesting some relationship with water. The exhibition reflects the gallery’s interest in cooperating with other undertakings in the county this month designed to draw attention to the importance of ’’the community’s water resources and the challenges they pose.
Two striking oils by Patricia Salmon aptly represent the sea-side “season” scene — one shows the side of a cafe on stilts called “The Pier” and the other a cottage porch and adjacent cottage, “Fearing Porch in August”, picturing wind-blown bathing togs and beach towels. While the temporariness of the situations attract attention, it is the interesting compositions and their “speaking” colors that make these informal scenes artistic.
