that invite study. His work is bright, made of strong blues, reds, greens, purples and much more. It features out of scale objects — a cardinal larger than a person in a “Rappahannock Landscape”, for instance — a pastoral scene of red bud, dogwood, cattle, mountains, rocks, a stream and wild flowers. The cardinal is hitched to what looks like a wooden cart in which there is a standing man. An enthralling figure is a cat-bird lady beneath a palm tree that on close inspection turns out to be a green raptor. A gigantic baby, in a boat drawn up just out of the water, holds one end of a rope that the cat-bird woman also holds. The precision of the painting, in Mr. Kenny’s four oil works, is outstanding. Their audacity, at the very least, commands attention.
B.J. Harlan’s two “Pond Tables”, of carved wood and steel are among the most attractive of the entries. She makes lilies and water float before us in greens, yellows, creams and blue.
