Outgoing President E. Franklin Warner spoke at the Rappahannock Lions Club’s annual picnic held on July 10 about his tenure as club president:
“Distinguished guest, families, friends, and fellow lions, it is with mixed emotions that I stand where I stood 367 days ago, having just been sworn as your president for the yfear 1996-97,” he said.
“I am glad to see this day come as I complete my year in your service, and service to this community, for it is together that we live out the motto of Lionism — “WE SERVE”.”
He said there was also a measure of sadness that they could not accomplish everything that was started but that was quickly overcome by the fact that the leadership of incoming president Butch Walker will enable the club to move forward with the programs and initiatives of the club.
Mr. Warner had pledged three things: lb continue the fine traditions of the club, and to bring upon it no shame or embarrassment; to increase the membership of the club; and to . lower the average age of the membership of the club.
The club had a very good year and raised nearly $15 thousand (as follows, Fourth of July Cafe 1996) $1,508; Spring Auction $4,887; Apple Butter $2,100; Draw-Down Raffle $4,100; and approximately $500 from miscellaneous sources such as mint sales, brooms, sales at Weakley Auction, etc.
The club distributed approximately $16 thousand (not a deficit, funds from previous year were available) as follows: sight and hearing van maintenance $1,000; 4-H Club $100; students against drunk driving after prom party $100; Kirk Davis Memorial $104; Rappahannock Athletic Boosters $520; purchase of tables and chairs for Senior Center $400; Rappahannock Social Services $720; Seniors Christmas $500; purchase of storafrfkrailer for club equipment and materiaf^^3,300; Rappahannock High School public speaking club $300; baseball league $500; DARE program $500; RCHS Girls
