He said it took him three years and many attempts until he was finally successful by using a hen decoy and turkey calls.
“Wild turkey have very good eyesight and the most difficult part is pulling the bow back without them seeing you,” he said.
In many western states, hunting licenses are often difficult to obtain and frequently lotteries decide who gets to buy a license. “Some places have a draw just to be able to kill one deer. People don’t know how good they have it here,” Carl said.
Virginia allowed three deer for the season last year and some years the only limit is two deer a day.
Although the heads are mounted, Carl said he never wasted the meat, leaving it with residents of the area when he was out of state.
Last year there was an over-population of buffalo in a herd near Gallup, N.M. There were five old bulls that the state’s Department of Game and Inland Fisheries wanted to cull and they planned an auction for the licenses to hunt them. Carl said $10,000 to $15,000 per license was the expected price.
The Green Peace Organization opposed the sale, saying the buffalo were not wild animals after years of exposure to humans, which was a valid argument, and enough pressure was applied to stop the auction. Tragically, all five of the bulls died of starvation last winter.
Carl insists that archery is safe. Patricia, his wife, is a skilled archer, although she doesn’t hunt. They have two children, a girl, 9, and a boy,8. His son killed a wild boar, but he used a rifle, said Carl.
