plight. His office found $27,000 in a program for lowincome families who own their homes. Three families, one of them Ethel’s, were to receive the funds, but the other two families rented rather than owned their homes so Ethel became to sole beneficiary.
The money was sent through the RappahannockRapidan Community Services Board, who had been in touch with the Virginia Housing and Development Authority on Ethel’s behalf.
Michael Soule, who is a senior citizens’ advocate for RRCSB, then needed to find agencies who could administer the funds for Ethel so the work could get done.
He managed to bring together Fauquier Housing and Rapidan Better Housing in Madison. Joanne Lomax of Fauquier Housing and Cindy Reid of RBH took estimates for bids and administered the funds for Ethel. They hired Don Coffey, a local contractor, and he got a crew together to fix Ethel’s home.
For the next three months Ethel’s home underwent a transition. She had simply tried to get her roof repaired.
What she got was, a new hipped roof, siding on the entire home, new gutters and down spouts, a new back porch with handrails, a new door on the back porch, two new windows in her living room, new storm windows, two closets were built, and they built a new bathroom designed for the handicapped with special hand holds and rails all around. They also replaced the electrical work, installed baseboard heating in the living room, bedroom and bathroom and a new drain field and septic system.
