Children from Madison, Orange, Culpeper and Rappahannock, between 8 and 16 years of age, are invited to participate, said Cliff Lewin, program director. It is being affiliated, he said, with the 4H program, which is co-educational. Although girls are invited to participate none have yet ventured out to pull back a bow string and take aim.
E&ch child is personally fitted for a bow. Arm guards, quivers, release trigger devices and sites are extra accoutrements of the archer’s gear. The total cost can range from $150 to $400 for a nattily turned out archer. There is an additional $25 annual fee. However, no child is turned away due to lack of equipment or enrollment fee, said Mr. Lewin.
Ken Carter of the Trading Post sells equipment to the club members for cost and on occasion has donated used equipment. If you have used equipment that you would like to donate, it would be greatly appreciated by some enthusiastic children.
“There are strict rules for behavior and no horsing around is permitted. Safety is foremost,” said Mr. Lewin. Sportsmanship is also emphasized as an important part of the sport.
There were four tournaments last year which drew the attention of over 200 adult spectators. They shot at spot targets and 3-D animals.
