It is only through public debate that the contrast can be drawn between the candidates, overcoming the bias of each campaign’s literature, and providing the voters with the information that they will need to make an informed decision on election day.
Candidates must be stood up in front of the people and made accountable for what they have done and what they will do.
An election should not be won on the merits of who shakes the most hands or who raises the most money. That is a foolhardy measuring stick which has far too often left us with inadequate - and negligent representation.
It is, unfortunately, the measuring stick which is most often used.
