Catbirds are sleek and elegant. Their charcoal gray feathers are set off by a black cap and a chestnut patch under the base of the tail. The full and correct common name of this fine bird is Gray Catbird, though I cannot imagine one being any other color. No doubt there is a catbird in the tropics someplace that is not gray.
The pair that have taken up residence in the yard of my Flint Hill home give me the distinct impression that I will be tolerated and even welcome as long as I behave myself. The yard, with all trees and shrubs is theirs. This naturally includes all berries and insects. Catbirds are benevolent proprietors.
Catbird couples are the most companionable bird-pairs I know. They are always together. See one, the other is surely about. I often sit at the round metal table on the little patio outside our back door to drink coffee and read the paper.
