lose.” The rumen is the first and largest of a cow’s four stomachs. If the rumen works properly, the animal will be comfortable, content, and grow efficiently. High quality forage contributes both protein and roughage in a cow’s diet, while poor quality or scrub feed doesn’t. Many inexperienced farmers mistakenly provide low protein hay to their cattle and expect them to thrive.

Secondly, farmers should be familiar with the soil maps of their properties. These are available in most counties from the tax assessment or extension offices and can be used to identify what plants can be most easily grown.

Miller also encourages new farmers to keep their percentage of debt as low as possible and to expand their operations gradually.

The Miller family wants to continue their breeding operation through their children and grandchildren, but Newbill Miller is, by his own admission, a practical man. “Economics may change everything,” he said, from unstable prices and rising taxes, to increased development in the county. In the meantime, though, there are new black calves at Ginger Hill and spring is in the air.
