“We’d love for every parent in Rappahannock to spend some time reading with his or her child on March 2,” said Liz Blubaugh, president of the Rappahannock County Education Association and a foreign language teacher in Rappahannock County schools.
That date is the anniversary of the birth of beloved children’s book author, Dr. Seuss, and the focal point for the RCEA’s campaign to stress reading. “It's a basic skill that not only contributes to a quality education, but can be a habit that adds great enjoyment to life,” says Blubaugh. “It also creates and contributes to strong bonds between parents and their children.”
In addition to planned activities in classrooms and schools, Blubaugh urges personal parental involvement on this night. “If you don’t know your children’s favorite book, ask them. Tell them what your favorite was at their age. Listen to them read aloud. Offer to read to.them.”
