It’s not just my imagination or wishful thinking, the days in mid-February are noticeably longer. Sunrise on Feb. 16, occurred at 6:58 a.m.; I was up well before that. It was still dark. That’s a vast difference from Dec. 17 —just before the Winter Solstice — when the sun rose at 7:21 a.m.
How short and dark the days were then when the sun set at 4:48 p.m. Today the sun will set at 5:46 p.m. By the time this reaches readers, there will be less than a month until March 20: the first day of spring. On that day we will have exactly 12 hours of darkness and 12 of daylight. From then until June 20, the longest day of light in the year, each day will gain more and more seconds of light.
