During the public comment session county residents Joy Sloane, president of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, Marc Malik, of RLEP, and Phil Irwin of Flint Hill both encouraged the commission to become part of the planning process for the Six Year Plan for Secondary Roads.
The commission decided to send a letter to the board of supervisors to request their thoughts about having the commission involved in the process.
Hans Gerhardt and Mary Bittinger, both of Slate Mills, informed the commission that the Korean Central Presbyterian Church, which applied here to build a retreat
space and now, with the rising school population, fuels a drive for physical expansion.
According to Gangel’s Jan. 23 report to the school board, the high school is at capacity and the cafeteria is within 20 students of exceeding fire marshall regulations. A “bubble” of children now advancing through grades 3-7 will put additional pressure on the high school. Funding for the project will be incorporated into next year’s budget plan. Sources for the money have not been identified although a bond is being considered.
During the school board’s meeting on Feb. 10, board member Ron Makela introduced the subject of the faulty roof over the Rappahannock Elementary School cafeteria. Tole stated that, when last called, the vender showed up quickly to tackle the leaks, but the leaking is still “severe.”
