a cemetery up there. I know of the one just back of Beech Spring Church at the edge of the first hill to the right, but was informed that there was another one further up. This one would be where my great great grandparents, William Austin and Nancy Belle Jenkins Burke, were buried. Oh, how I still recall my great great aunt, Goldie Burke Jones Dodson, telling about their funerals!
Before proceeding with this story I’m including a tale related to me by my grandmother upon the occasion of their visit with her mother’s relatives up here.
As grandmother, her sister Bessie, and their mother, Emily Burke Dwyer were visiting on the mountain (i.e., Hazel), they were in the company of Aunt Zooie going to see someone else. The road being described as “pretty level after you got up there”, they saw approaching some men, four men. They were going two by two with poles across their shoulders from which hung, supported by ropes, a large wooden barrel, suspended between them. This scared Aunt Bessie so much she started running back to Aunt Zooie’s house and they never got to visit whoever it was they were going to see. It appears this was fresh batch of “shine” or a purchase thereof being transported by these hearty gentlemen.
Resuming the story. We retraced our path back down Beech Spring Hollow at a point where the road had crossed the stream. We’d taken the right fork here going up. Taking the other fork now and proceeding to follow that until we came to its end up on the top of a fairly level spot from which we could view Sperryville, making out several places like Swindler’s home. Never locating a cemetery the whole trip was a little disappointing but not disheartening. This just means some more good hikes to be made.
I regard times like these not failures at all, for, in fact, they are successes. Successes in the sense that you’ve not only had some good exercise, seen territory you’ve not seen before, trod where kindred of another time once trod, but bonded with family members, especially the younger ones. Quality time with loved ones, things that matter to the heart! A Valentine’s Day most uncommonly well spent.
