The Rappahannock High School varsity girls volleyball team met the Powhatan Indians in the Region B Quarter Finals last Wednesday at Madison County High School.
Neither the beautiful facility nor the more than-ample Panther traveling cheering section was enough to alter the heartbreaking results. Despite some of their best individual efforts of the season, the Panthers were defeated two games to one.
The Indians jumped to an early lead in the first game before several nice serves by Katy Paratore helped to tie the score at 3/3. Eight unanswered points later the panthers were down 11/3.
A powerful serve by Sonya Wigington and a spike by Alice Gentry brought the score to 11/8. That was as close as it got. The Panthers lost 15/8.
The second game started with the Panthers right where they wanted to be — in control! They began with a 2/0 lead and quickly accelerated to a 10/5 lead. Just when the fans thought the game was won, the Indians fought back to make it an 11/11 tie.
