Tax season is right around the corner and there is free tax assistance on the way for Rappahannock residents.
Low income families and individuals and those 60 and over can take advantage of the free income tax assistance sites opfening in February. Last tax season and this year as well the Rappahannock Library is the place where people could get their tax returns reviewed and completed by trained volunteers.
The program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, American Association of Retired Persons and Virginia Cooperative Extension. Volunteers attend a four day training and must successfully complete an exam by the IRS. Volunteers are then placed in sites around the community.
They are called VITA/TCE sites which stand for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance/Tax Counseling for the Elderly. The sites open in February and operate until April 15.
