My family and I eat venison, but that’s not why I hunt. It’s hard to put the mixture of emotions that I feel afield into words, and I could probably not convince an urbanite with an anti-gun prejudice that I, too, love the animals that I pursue. I have developed great respect for the whitetailed deer over time.

Deer I have observed have filled me with awe, joy, grief, frustration and determination. I still feel like a student of nature after nearly 35 years of hunting them. I leave a lot more deer alive than dead each year. This past season for instance, I shot only two and parsed up more than 30 within easy range.
