Ronald Jenkins arrived on Dec. 4 to Rappahannock County as the new postmaster in Flint Hill. He had been a clerk at the postal service for 23 years in Berryville, Va. The new job represents a promotion for Jenkins.
He says, “It’s tough to move from a clerk to a postmaster’s position. So in the smaller offices, when they become available, they’re available to the clerks.”
The postal service has an officer in charge program for clerks who are seeking promotion to postmaster. In the OIC program, a candidate will run a post office during a vacancy left by a postmaster’s departure. They will fill in until the newly appointed postmaster arrives. Jenkins attended OIC programs twice which afforded him with invaluable information.
Now that Jenkins has accepted the position in Flint Hill, his commute has changed from two to thirty seven miles. Right now, he is uncertain as to whether or not he will move to this area.
When he decided to take the position in Flint Hill, Jenkins recalls, “In Berryville, people said, Now what do you want to go over there for? I lived two miles from work. I’d go home for lunch. So, here it’s a change. But it’s worth it I think.”
