snow days, and he thanked VDOT “for the way the roads were taken care of.” Dr. Gangel provided an update on the RCHS addition, and said that the project was “right on schedule.” He also discussed RCHS roof repairs, and told the board that he had received a quote of $31,712 for the last 3558 sq. ft. section of roof, and compared that to the ‘99 roof repair cost of some $55,000 for 3565 sq. ft.
• Richie Burke, Vice Chairman of the Fire Levy Board, provided information and recommendations for paying operating expenses incurred by the fire and rescue squads. The board unanimously approved some $90,000 in expenditures from Fire Levy funds.
• In response to a question from Phil Irwin, Mr. McCarthy opined that the new transfer station would open, after innumerable delays, by June of this year. The opening of the transfer station will be followed, as reported last summer, by the closing of the county’s dumpster sites in Huntly and Scrabble.
• John McCarthy noted that the 2000 census is nearly upon us. Forms will be mailed to all residents, and those who do not return them will be visited by a census-taker crew.
• At the 7 p.m. session the board approved all three applications presented. They included the Gillis special exemption application for a residential care facility, the Bridges application for Jenkins Mountain A-F District withdrawal, and the Miller application for Haskell A-F District tag-on.
