Gangel said, “Well Jami [student representative Gillis], I hate to become public enemy number one, but unfortunately the Virginia code . . .” as he explained the need to extend the school year by one week, to June 15, because of the need to make up for four school days lost to snow. Under this make-up plan, graduation will also be delayed one week, to June 17, and the SOL testing window will be slipped to May 15-26. Mr. Warner moved quickly to approve the revised schedule “to share” some of the onus, and the school board voted unanimously to extend the school year by one week.
