A recent article in the Financial Times, headlined “Play it again, Johann Sebastian,” suggested that Bach could be “the composer of the second ^millennium.” :->y \
The writer applauded the passing of early 20th century “heavy handed readings...which paid due reverence to a grand old master but so often forgot to seek the light, the colour, the humanity within the work.”
Nowadays, the article continued, interpreters reflect “a generally deeper awareness of what the style demands of them,” with more varied approaches than have been obtained in the past.
Music goers in Washington are fortunate to have two of the outstanding members of the Smithsonian Chamber Players as interpreters of Bach’s Suites for Harpsichord and Unaccompanied Cello.
