Much has been said or written lately about
the word “Village”. This letter is not related to any of the legal, political or localgovernmental definitions, but to share a point of view with others who have the blessing to live in Rappahannock’s villages.
My early years were spent in a village in a country where villages are commonplace. This, therefore, was where I learned at a young age the values that I still hold. I am so proud now, at the other end of my life, to again be able to reap the benefits of village life in our county.
For example, the friendliness of having a neighbor who called up to ask if a missing cat had been found and was safely home (the answer was “Yes” by the way), or to go to the local post office or village store where they greet you by name. A village is a place where we’ve been able to make reciprocal arrangements with a neighbor to bush-hog long field grasses in return for the resulting hay needed for his horses.
